Wirewound resistors have some very desirable characteristics. They have superior surge handling capability. They can offer higher precision and more tightly controlled temperature coefficients than any other technology. And, they are more stable. Several applications are especially important. The need to extend battery life in all types of portable devices has opened a new growth market for low-value SMT current sensing resistors. These resistors have values as low as 0.005 ohms in power ratings from 0.25 to 2 watts.
Many of Riedon’s power resistors have high power ratings. Although power requirements are typically less than two watts for digital circuitry, ratings above two watts are common for industrial applications such as motor controls, assembly equipment, and robotics.
Medical and industrial instrumentation markets typically rely on high-precision and high-power leaded devices. These are good applications for wirewound resistors.
New solid-state power devices with high voltage ratings (IGBT, IGCT, MC, MTO) are creating fresh demand for passive components with high power, high voltage and high current ratings. This new technology could cause a market “rebirth” for wirewound resistors.
