Sudden current or voltage changes are often hazardous to electronic products.\u00a0 For example, transients or surges that reach microprocessor or memory components can destroy those expensive parts, and wipe out critical programming and data.\u00a0 Many electronic products now include surge protection<\/a> circuits.<\/p>\n

Riedon resistors<\/p><\/div>\n

In these circuits, low value resistors sense when the current is too high so that measures can be taken upstream before the excess current causes damage.\u00a0 Wirewound resistors are a popular choice for these applications.\u00a0 They are inexpensive, available in low resistance values, have low temperature coefficients and good surge\u2011handling capability.<\/a> Riedon has served this application for years with their \u201cLO OHM\u201d power resistors.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Now, Riedon\u2019s SL resistors<\/a> add an additional application advantage.\u00a0 We designed them for PC board surface mounting to satisfy the growing demand for new high density boards fabricated with automated pick\u2011and\u2011place equipment.<\/p>\n

SL resistors<\/a> use an alloy strip resistance element, the best design for resistance values as low as 0.005 ohms.\u00a0 The strip element has extremely small inductance.\u00a0 This feature is important where circuits involve very fast rise times; transients, or “spikes,” are common in current\u2011sensing applications.<\/p>\n

SL resistors are also more robust.\u00a0 They have only three components: the resistance strip and two leads.\u00a0 We weld<\/em><\/strong> the leads to the strip, and mold the assembly in high\u2011 temperature epoxy.<\/p>\n

With wirewound resistors, you get the best stability and lowest temperature coefficient.\u00a0 With strip elements, you also<\/em><\/strong> get very low inductance and good response to fast rise\u2011time transients.\u00a0 Strip and wirewound designs are known for their good surge\u2011handling capability, an obvious requirement in these applications.\u00a0 You get all<\/em><\/strong> these features at a low cost with Riedon\u2019s SL Series resistors.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
