{"id":1608,"date":"2020-01-21T21:56:38","date_gmt":"2020-01-21T21:56:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/riedon.com\/blog\/?p=1608"},"modified":"2020-10-15T08:00:39","modified_gmt":"2020-10-15T08:00:39","slug":"extremely-high-pulse-withstanding-example","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riedon.com\/blog\/extremely-high-pulse-withstanding-example\/","title":{"rendered":"Extremely High Pulse Withstanding Example"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>How do Riedon resistors handle an extreme pulse?<\/h4>\n<p>Riedon was recently contacted by an industrial controls company seeking a solution for a pulse requirement in one of their new products.&nbsp; During normal operation the resistors need to absorb around 100 joules of energy each.&nbsp; To meet this requirement, we developed a pulse rated part based on our UTN-7A 100 OHM 5% (SPxxxx).&nbsp; Note that this resistor is rated for 7 watts<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/riedon.com\/media\/pdf\/UT.pdf\">https:\/\/riedon.com\/media\/pdf\/UT.pdf<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The customer performs a specific test that simulates a short circuit condition.&nbsp; The criteria for the short circuit test are that two of the resistors connected in series withstand a 24-amp pulse for five seconds.&nbsp; This calculates to 115,200 watts!<\/p>\n<p>The video shows the results of this test.&nbsp; The two resistors are located center screen.&nbsp; Note that around the sixteen second mark the UL 94V-0 rated coating does catch fire, but immediately extinguishes as expected.&nbsp; Customer advises that after the test, the resistors still met electrical specifications (i.e. 100 ohms +\/- 5%).<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 1080px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('video');<\/script><![endif]-->\n<video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-1608-1\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/riedon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/short-term-overload-test.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/riedon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/short-term-overload-test.mp4\">https:\/\/riedon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/short-term-overload-test.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p>Clearly, this is an extreme example.&nbsp; It does, however, illustrate the pulse withstanding capabilities of our product line as well as the overall robustness of the assembled component.&nbsp; It is also an excellent example of how ideally suited to pulse applications wire wound resistors are.&nbsp; More information on the advantages of wire wound resistors may be found here:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/riedon.com\/blog\/revival-of-wirewound-resistors-the-report-of-my-death-was-an-exaggeration\/\">https:\/\/riedon.com\/blog\/revival-of-wirewound-resistors-the-report-of-my-death-was-an-exaggeration\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Do you have any tough to solve resistor requirements we can assist with?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How do Riedon resistors handle an extreme pulse?
