{"id":1360,"date":"2017-05-15T14:26:49","date_gmt":"2017-05-15T14:26:49","guid":{"rendered":"\/blog\/?p=1360"},"modified":"2017-05-25T22:07:54","modified_gmt":"2017-05-25T22:07:54","slug":"resistor-thermal-resistance-beyond","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/riedon.com\/blog\/resistor-thermal-resistance-beyond\/","title":{"rendered":"TO resistor -Thermal resistance and beyond"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Heat dissipation is a key factor in the design of a power system; in a world where the trend is for more power in a smaller space, are <a href=\"http:\/\/riedon.com\/resistors\/high-power\/\">TO-style packages <\/a>still the best solution?\u00a0 TO packages were originally intended for discrete transistors, in fact TO stands for \u2018transistor outline\u2019.\u00a0 The metal flange that protrudes from the top, or the mounting hole in the packaging, makes them easily identifiable.\u00a0 The flange\u2019s role is to dissipate heat, but to make it more effective it can be connected to a metal plate that acts as a heat sink, usually made of steel or aluminium, or the flange can even bolted to the design\u2019s metal plate housing.\u00a0 In order to decide if the TO package is the best solution for your design, it\u2019s important to know the limit of the thermal properties the design will have to operate under.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1361\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/To-Thermal.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1361\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1361\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/To-Thermal-300x235.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"235\" srcset=\"https:\/\/riedon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/To-Thermal-300x235.jpg 300w, https:\/\/riedon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/To-Thermal.jpg 523w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1361\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cross-section of a TO-220 resistor mounted on a heat sink<\/p><\/div>\n<h1>Thermal resistance is key to understanding the thermal properties of a system.<\/h1>\n<p>The thermal resistance is measured by calculating the sum of the thermal resistance parts, and in order to keep a system cool this has to be kept as low as possible.\u00a0 There are a number of factors that will affect the thermal resistance of a resistor; from the property of the component itself to the area of contact between the internal resistance film, the alumina substrate and the copper flange.\u00a0 Successful power resistors should be designed to maximise the contact area within their internal structure.\u00a0 An easy generalisation is that the bigger the actual resistor along with a higher rated power, the lower the thermal resistance.\u00a0 In order to maximise the effectiveness of the heat sink in terms of it\u2019s thermal resistance, the size and shape need to be optimized, especially when not using a plate.<\/p>\n<p>The quality of contact between the flange and the heat sink is integral to the thermal resistance of a <a href=\"http:\/\/riedon.com\/resistors\/high-power\/\">TO-packaged resistor<\/a>.\u00a0 A smooth surface will provide the best contact, so usually a thin layer of thermal grease is added between the two parts.\u00a0 This is specially designed to have a low thermal resistance, typically around 0.005\u00b0C\/W per square inch, which will have a negligible effect on the whole system\u2019s thermal resistance.\u00a0 It\u2019s important to note that different thermal gels and adhesives will have different effects depending on how thickly they need to be applied.<\/p>\n<p>The maximum power that can be dissipated by the system can be worked out by calculating the maximum temperature difference between the heat source and the ambient air, and then dividing that by the total thermal resistance of the heat-flow path.\u00a0 In reality it is essential to build a prototype and verify the actual temperatures, as the ambient air temperature will change as the power components heat up when the equipment is active.
